The Page Two team is saddened to announce that Phil Lind, co-author of Tales of an Unsung Sourdough: The Extraordinary Klondike Adventures of Johnny Lind, passed away on Sunday on the day of his eightieth birthday.
Phil Lind served as the vice-chairman and personal adviser to the late Ted Rogers of Rogers Communications Inc. for four decades, beginning his long career in telecommunications as a program officer in 1969.
Lind, along with his co-author, Robert Brehl, turned to Page Two to help amplify the story of his late grandfather, Johnny Lind. Phil Lind’s grandfather was a Canadian teen and railroader from Ontario who traveled to the Yukon at the time of the Klondike Gold Rush right at the end of the nineteenth century. What he left behind were personal journals that recounted his experience of the Gold Rush craze, a story that his grandson would later have the opportunity to tell, just a few short months before his passing.
Tales of an Unsung Sourdough: The Extraordinary Klondike Adventures of Johnny Lind was released in May of this year. We are saddened to say goodbye to an icon like Phil Lind. Our team is only grateful that Phil and Robert were able to tell this important, historical and deeply personal family story before Phil’s passing. This project was facilitated by the University of British Columbia where the Lind family’s personal Klondike Gold Rush collection lives to this day. A new gallery opening of the Phil Lind Klondike Gold Rush Collection at UBC is forthcoming.
We at Page Two send our deepest condolences to Phil Lind’s family. It was an honour to work with him and to have the opportunity to shepherd thisĀ story into the world. You can read more about Phil Lind’s legacy and impressive careerĀ in this Globe and Mail article, released this week.
